5 Nutrient Packed Carbohydrate Sources

Carbohydrates are one of the three main macronutrients your body needs to survive. Their main function is to provide your body with the energy it needs to function effectively. However, if you choose the best carbs they can also give your body vital nutrients. In this article I am going to provide you with five nutrient packed carbohydrate sources.

1) APPLES:- Apples are a good low calorie source of carbs. They are also rich in fibre and vitamin C which both have a selection of health benefits. Fibre promotes good bowel health and protects you from various diseases such as cancer and diabetes. Vitamin C supports a strong immune system and is essential for the production of the connective tissue collagen.

2) BANANAS:- Bananas are a great afternoon snack which can give you a much needed energy boost. Not only are they a good carbohydrate source but they also contain a selection of vital nutrients including manganese, potassium and vitamin B6. Manganese promotes strong bones and assists with the absorption of certain vitamins. Potassium can reduce blood pressure and increase bone thickness. Vitamin B6 assists in the breakdown of proteins and helps your body produce various chemicals.

3) BELL PEPPERS:- Bell peppers are a great addition to curries, casseroles and stews. They are also a great source of vitamin E and vitamin K. Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant that protects your cells from damage and protects your body from disease. Vitamin K helps your blood clot and is needed so that your wounds heal properly.

4) MUSHROOMS:- Mushrooms are another fantastic carbohydrate source that can be added to a variety of meals. They are also nutrient rich containing high levels of vitamin B2, copper and tryptophan. Vitamin B2 helps your body produce red blood cells and also helps keep your skin healthy. Copper helps your body absorb iron and keeps your connective tissue healthy. Tryptophan can help you sleep and boost your mood.

5) ONIONS:- Onions are a crunchy carb that can add texture to a selection of meals. They also provide your body with a healthy dose of chronium and flavanoids. Chronium makes your cells more responsive to insulin which can help keep your blood sugar levels under control. Flavanoids have been strongly linked with cancer prevention and can significantly reduce your chances of contracting this disease.

As you can see fruits and vegetables are excellent carbohydrate sources. Not only are they your body's preferred energy source but they also come with large helpings of additional nutrients which support good health. If you do not currently eat fruits and vegetables I highly recommend you start incorporating them into your diet.
